Fast Food Nation

I wasn't sure exactly sure what we were supposed to be focusing on when writing on this blog. But I will just go with the flow of everyone elses posts :-) After reading these two chapters, the book really opened my eyes to the horrors behind low wage work specifically fast food chains and slaughter houses. In reading Chapter 3 on fast food chain work, I was not suprised by how manipulative the different corporations are. It is a sad reality that I think every single person has come in contact with in their life. But what I didn't know was the huge dependence on machinery instead of human work. I figured that working at these fast food chains, workers had a lot of monotonous food making to do. But in reality, machines do everything for you!! They tell you when to put it in and tell you when to take the food out. You don't even have to turn a hamburger over for heaven's sakes! Fast food really is the lazy alternative to dining. Not even the workers have to do anything to prepare it. But out of all the reading, I was absolutely appalled by Chapter 9 reading on slaughter houses. There was more than one time in the reading when I had to put the book down and breath because I thought I was going to pass out from all the gory detail! Of course, after reading that I pledged never to eat meat again and then realized later that day how hard it is to keep in out of your life! I don't know how vegetarians do it! (not that I find being a vegetarian wrong by any means!) But I think that the reaction that I got from reading the chapter is the reason why the book is so popular. It brings up a very "pushed under the rug" and controversial topic that makes people take a second and think about their own life and how they take part in the whole scheme of things....in other words...Schlosser makes the book "hit close to home".
In writing my hypertext essay, I looked at how Schlosser took a very sensitive topic and brought it to the service to bring up debate and unsettling feeling. I hope that my hypertext essay can bring to the surface some of these same feelings.

But yes, Chapter 9.....absolutely disgusting!!!
